Description The microorganism is gram negative,catalase positive, oxidase negative,and nonmotile. Serratia plymuthica V4 was isolated from a biofilm that formed on the pasteurizer plate of a sanitized milk processing line. Serratia plymuthica has been used as a biological control agent of fungal plant pathogens in agriculture (Kloepper et al. 1992; Stanley et al. 1994; McInroy and Kloepper 1995; McCullagh et al. 1996; Berg et al.1998; Frankowski et al. 1998)

Habitat/Source The habitat of Serratia plymuthica is predominantly water, although it has also been isolated from soil, plants,insects, and wild animals and sometimes from clinical samples. The Gram-negative bacterium Serratia plymuthica has frequently been associated with plants and has been isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat, oat, cucumber, maize, oil seed rape and potato (Alstrom and Gerhardson 1988;Grimmont and Grimmont 1992; Kalbe et al. 1996).
Pathogenicity Nosocomial Septicemia Caused by Serratia plymuthica.Serratia plymuthica is usually a saprophytic organism that is rarely recovered from clinical material. The pathogenic role of this bacterium is evident,according to the some reports in the literature, and must be considered capable of causing serious infections in humans.
