Shigella is a group of Gram-negative,rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae, Shigella were discovered over 100 years ago by the Japanese microbiologist Shiga.Shigella species are normal inhabitants of human intestinal tract and causes Shigellosis disease.Shigella is one of the major cause of diarrhea worldwide.Shigella is transmitted from an infected person to another by a fecal-oral route.Most Shigella infections are the result of the bacterium passing from stools or soiled fingers of one person to the mouth of another person.Shigella bacteria produce toxins that can attack the lining of the large intestine, causing swelling, ulcers on the intestinal wall, and bloody diarrhea.Phylogentic studies suggest Shigella is closely related to genus Salmonella and Escherichia.
