Medicinal Properties | Bitter, acrid, astringent, antipyretic, constipating, diuretic and tonic. Flowers: astringent, bitter, sweet, ophthalmic, aphrodisiac and expectorant.

Medicinal Use | Roots and leaves decoction is given in dysuria, urethrorrhea, intermittent fevers, diarrhoea and bronchitis. Root decoction is specifically used for haemorrhoids. Flowers are useful in hepatopathy, ophthalmopathy, bronchitis, cough and swellings.

Chemistry | Hydroxylated germacrianolides, molephantin and molephantinin having cytotoxic and antitumour properties. Phantomolin and its cis-epoxide, elephantin, elephantopin, deoxyelephantopin, iso-deoxyelephantopin, lupeol, epifriedelanol and stigmasterol.

Description | A rigid herb, perennial with short root stock. Leaves: obovate-oblong, radical forming a spreading rosette on the ground, hairy on both surfaces. Flowers: purple in heads, heads numerous, closely packed. Fruits: achenes, pappus of 4-6 bristles dialated at the base. Flowers and fruits appears during September-December.
