Medicinal Properties Roots: sweet, astringent, bitter, acrid, refrigerant, anti-inflammatory, anodyne, aphrodisiac, expectorant, appetizing, carminative, digestive, anthelmintic, constipating, diaphoretic, diuretic, antiarthritic, febrifuge and tonic. Leaves: stomachic, and anodyne. Fruits(tender): expectorant, carminative, and stomachic. Fruits(mature): acrid, sweet, anthelmintic and stomachic. Seeds: purgative.
Medicinal Use Roots: useful in inflammations, dropsy, sprains, neuralgia, hiccough, cough, asthma, bronchitis, anorexia, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, helminthiasis, diarrhoea, dysentery, strangury, gout, vomiting, leucoderma, wounds, rheumatoid arthritis and fever. Leaves: useful in stomachalgia, flatulence, cephalalgia, ulcers and splenomegaly. Fruits(tender): used in cough, bronchitis, dyspepsia, flatulence, colic and leucoderma. Fruits(mature): used in pharyngodynia, cardiac disorders, helminthiasis, gastropathy, bronchitis and haemotthoids.
ChemistryStem and root bark: three flavone colouring matters, viz. oroxylin-A, baicalein and chrysin. Bark: traces of an alkaloid, charya. Seeds: yellow crystalline principle and baicalein and its glucoside i.e. tetuin.

Regional HabitatThroughout Rajasthan in deciduous forests and in moist areas.
DescriptionA small to medium sized deciduous tree, grows upto 2 m in height, having soft light brown bark with corky lenticels. Leaves: very large, 90-180 cm long, 2-3 pinnate with 5 or more pairs of primary pinnate, rachis very soft and cylindric, leaflets 2-4 pairs ovate or elliptic, acuminate and glabrous. Flowers: lurid to reddish purple outside, dull or pale pinkish yellow within, numerous in large erect racemes. Fruits: flat capsules, upto 1 m long tapering to both ends.
