Medicinal Use | Whole plant used in bronchitis, cough, constipation and in dropsy, decoction used in gonorrhoea and promotes conception. Fruits, flowers and stem: prescribed in vesicular and watery eruption, juice of the berries beneficial in sorethroat, fine powder mixed with honey cures children chronic cough. Leaves: juice with black pepper given in rheumatism. Root: useful in catarrhal affections, pain in the chest.

Description | A prickly, diffuse herb. Leaves: ovate or elliptic sinuate or subpinnatifid glabrescent, with many straight spines. Flowers: borne in few-flowered, lateral cymes. Corolla blue, lobes shallow. Fruits: globose, glabrous berries, whitish and green-blotched, yellow when ripe. Seeds: glabrous. Flowers and fruits from March-July.
