Medicinal Properties Bark: astringent, emetic, abortifacient, analgesic, constipating and antiseptic. Fruits: bitter, acrid, thermogenic, anti-inflammatory, carminative. Root: aphrodisiac, diuretic, haematinic, tonic and cooling.
Medicinal Use Bark: useful in ostalgia in fever, diarrhoea, dysentery and cuts. Fruits: useful in pains and sprains, inflammations, gout, leprosy, cough, asthma etc. The unripe fruit roasted in wood ashes is used in diarrhoea and dysentery. Root: useful in biliousness and strangury. Wood ashes: useful in diarrhoea and dysentery.
ChemistryFruits: mannitol and leucoanthocyanidin. Hydrolysis of fruit extract yielded oleanolic acid.

DescriptionSmall trees, grows up to 6m high. Bark reddish brown, scaly. Branches: thick, horizontal, younger 4-angled. Leaves: crowded at the end of branchlets, obovate or obovate-oblong, more or less pubescent and reticulately veined. Flowers: solitary at the end of branchlets, white, fragrant, 3-5 cm in diameter. Pedicels short. Calyx 1.0-1.3 cm long, fleshy green. Corolla glabrous outside. Fruits: smooth, yellowish brown, crowned with persistent calyx limb. Seeds: numerous, compressed, smooth. Flowers and fruits appears during March - November.
