contaminated seafood, such as raw oysters, shrimp, clams
Pathological Factor
Many factors including extracellular Capsule Polysaccharide (CPS), cytotoxins and many hydrolytic enzymes, hemolysin/cytolysin are known to be pathogenic. The major virulence factor of V.vulnificus is CPS which protect the bacteria from bactericidal and phagocytosis and allows survival in the human host. Encapsulated strains of V. Vulnificus possessing the ability to resist destruction by stomach acid and serum phagocytosis.
