Description: Escherichia is a genus of Gram-negative, non-spore forming, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria from the family Enterobacteriaceae. They are part of the indigenous intestinal flora of warm-blooded animals; and in the case of E. blattae , of cockroaches. Some of its species also provides a portion of the microbially derived vitamin K for their host . Escherichia spp. is an opportunistic pathogen, some species causes intestinal and extraintestinal diseases. E. coli is responsible for the vast majority of Escherichia-related pathogenesis, other members of the genus have also been implicated in human disease. |
