Description: Klebsiella is a group of Gram-negative,rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. These organisms are categorized microbiologically as gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, nonmotile bacteria. The organisms are named after Edwin Klebs. These organisms occur in soil and water and on plants, and some strains are considered a part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. Most of them are characterized by a prominent polysaccharide capsule that encases the entire cell surface, accounts for the large appearance and provides resistance against many host defense mechanisms. |
